The Linowes Family Camping Rules

Back

These camping rules are very important for the safety and sanity of the group.

On the first day out, the troop leader (Dad) sat everyone down and presented the list. However, it didn't take long for the kids to start tracking how many of Dad's rules that Dad was breaking, not to mention everyone else. Subsequently, we meet as a group and discussed how to amend the list to be more realistic. Here is what we came up with:

Base Camp

  1. Good behavior: We stick together as a team. No fighting or arguing. No loud yelling. No whining.
  2. Beware of fire: Learn to handle it responsibly. Keep fire sticks in the fire circle, don’t point sticks. Keep a container of water nearby.
  3. Tent: Shoes off in the tent, or if you do step into the tent with shoes, stay off the sleeping areas. Keep the tent screen zipped; go in and out quickly. Don’t lean on the tent or scratch it.
  4. Lantern: Stay clear of the Coleman lantern, it's hot! Lantern not allowed in the tent.
  5. Food: Don't spill food. Dispose of scraps in a "scraps bag". Store food bags away from camp at night. No food allowed in the tent.
  6. Supplies: Keep bins closed and neat. Cover at night.

Hiking

  1. Stay in groups: Don't go out alone. Always notify an adult when you are going somewhere.
  2. Use the walkie talkie: Wear it; don't set it down (outside the base camp).
  3. Always carry a whistle:
    "ATTENTION": One long blow (Beeeeep).
"HELP": 3 short blows (beep-beep-beep) calls for help. Do not use this signal except in emergency. If you don't have a whistle, yell for help.
  4. Emergency: If you get lost, sit down, blow your whistle or yell, and wait. If you get seriously hurt, call or send someone for help, lie down, and wait.
  5. Water: Drink plenty of water. Drink clean water only. Don't drink from streams or ponds.
  6. Ticks: Check for ticks, often.
  7. Cuts: Clean and bandage any cuts.

ATV

  1. Must be 18 to drive.
  2. Always wear a helmet, and goggles or glasses
  3. No playing or climbing on the ATV or trailer
  4. Do not stand in front or behind the ATV, even when it's parked.
